Vol. 334 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Factory.

8.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he will indicate the possibilities of Fismar (Ireland) Limited reopening its Waterford factory; and if he is aware of the reasons given by the company for its closure.

I am sure that, like me, the Deputy deplores the abruptness with which cessation of manufacturing by the company in question was announced and effected.

The reason given by the company was the factory's high operating costs which made their products uncompetitive in the UK, their main market.

I understand that the decision to close down was stated by the overseas parent company to be a final one. In the circumstances I do not consider that there is any realistic possibility of securing the re-opening of the factory under the present ownership. Instead, the IDA are seeking urgently to attract a replacement project to the premises.

Is the Minister optimistic that a replacement project will be found in the near future?

It is too early to speculate on it. I would like to have firm information from the IDA before I speculate on it.

Is the Minister aware that the unemployment situation in Waterford has become extremely serious and that the city especially should be designated under the IDA?

I am aware of the serious unemployment situation in Waterford and in other areas, and every effort will be made to try to attract new industries there.
