Vol. 334 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Company Redundancies.

11.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he is aware that a company (details supplied) in Dublin have recently announced 242 redundancies; if he will indicate the full Government grant-aid including that for machinery and training for the company; and the action the Government intend to take to avoid these redundancies.

The company in question recently informed the Industrial Development Authority of their intention to close one of the production lines at their works at Clonskeagh, Dublin, and to make 242 workers redundant by 31 May 1982.

The company, which are engaged in the printing of bank notes for export markets, attributed their decision principally to a decline in the market for their services. This decline they claimed has similarly affected their plants in other countries, requiring a reduction in the work force in all of them.

Having regard to the extent of the grant-aided investment in its Irish plant by the company in recent years, the IDA have represented to them that the level of redundancies proposed is excessive. As a result the company have agreed to reconsider this aspect of the matter but have given no other commitment. The IDA are maintaining close contact with the company both at local and headquarters levels.

Details of industrial and training grants which have been approved or paid to the company in respect of their operations at Clonskeagh have been published in the annual reports of the IDA for the relevant years between 1966 and 1979. Details of payments made to the company during 1981 will be published in the IDA's annual report for that year, which will be issued later this year.
