Vol. 335 No. 1

Written Answers. - Employment of Nurses in USA.

895.

asked the Minister for Health whether he can provide any training or experience for the cohort of nurses who are now graduating to compensate for the lack of maternity or psychiatric qualifications which disqualify them from getting employment in the USA.

The requirements necessary to practise nursing in this country and to comply with EEC directives are specified by An Bord Altranais. Neither the board nor I have any function in arranging for Irish nurses to obtain experience or training to meet requirements set by USA authorities to practise nursing in that country. It is a matter for each nurse who wishes to practise in the USA to obtain whatever additional training or experience she may require and hospitals as a rule facilitate nurses in this regard.
