Vol. 335 No. 1

Patents Bill, 1981: Committee Stage (Resumed).

SECTION 40.

I move amendment No. 9:

In page 24, between lines 5 and 6, to insert the following new subsection:

"(2) This section shall come into operation on such day, being a day not earlier than the day appointed by the Minister pursuant to section 1 (2), as the Minister may by order appoint."

Perhaps the Minister can guide me: is the expression "European Economic Community", strictly speaking, correct usage? I had some idea that it was referred to usually as the European Community without the word "Economic", or is that a mistake?

No, the European Economic Community is one of the three Communities. Collectively the Communities are known as the European Communities. But to differentiate it from the Coal and Steel Community and the Euratom Community it is properly called the European Economic Community.

Yes, but there are not any members of the Coal and Steel Community or of Euratom who are not also members of the other.

There are not, but there are separate Treaties.

Of course, I know that. What I am trying to say is that I thought the correct umbrella description of the Common Market was just the European Community.

Plural, Communities.

Communities, yes.

Amendment agreed to.
Section 40, as amended, agreed to.
Progress reported; Committee to sit again.
