Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - Transfer of Department Section.

547.

asked the Minister for the Public Service the proposals there are to transfer a section of a Government Department to Dundalk, County Louth.

When the Government announced the decentralisation programme in October 1980, Dundalk was the designated centre for a section of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs. The number of staff to be transferred was approximately 300. After the 1981 general election the incoming Government placed the programme under review and there it remained throughout their term of office.

With our return to office the programme has been reactivated and arrangements are in hand for its early implementation. Already tenders have been invited for the provision of the necessary office accomodation in five of the designated centres. In the case of Dundalk planning has been delayed due to the difficulty of finding a suitable site. A site is now in prospect and the planning stage will commence as soon as the site is secured.
