Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - Radio and TV Reception.

588.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the inferior reception quality of Radio Éireann in the South-West Cork constituency, particularly the peninsula areas, he will take immediate steps to have it improved; and if in view of the inferior reception quality of Telefís Éireann in the Glengarriff, Adrigole, Durrus, Ahakista, Kilcrohane and other areas within the peninsulas of South-West Cork, he will take steps to provide a booster station and to have it erected at the summit of Mount Gabriel, Schull, to alleviate the problem, thereby providing good reception in the areas concerned.

Radio service for the South-West Cork area is provided by the VHF transmitter at Mullaghanish and by the FM transmitters at Tullamore and Athlone. RTE are aware that there are difficulties with reception in some parts of the areas, particularly at night. It is not possible to deal with all areas of poor reception at the same time and there are no immediate plans to improve radio coverage in this area.

Television reception in the areas west of Mullaghanish transmitter should be improved when the present work of renewing Mullaghanish transmitting aerials is completed. A further survey will then be carried out by RTE in any areas where reception problems still exist.

Further plans for the area will have to await the results of such survey.
