Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

626.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when steps will be taken to overcome the shortage of subscriber equipment at Wexford telephone exchange.

Installation of a new 1,400 line subscriber exchange at Wexford is scheduled to start in September and it is expected to have it in service by May of next year.

627.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when Ferbane telephone exchange in County Offaly will become automatic; and if he will outline the position in relation to the work on the changeover to automatic working.

It is expected that automatic working will be introduced in 1984. The present position is that the building for the new exchange has been completed; work will commence later this year on the erection of a co-axial cable to Athlone to serve the new automatic exchanges at Banagher and Ferbane, and installation of the exchange equipment at Ferbane should begin within the next year.

628.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when Birr telephone exchange in County Offaly will become automatic; and if he will outline the position in relation to the work on the changeover to automatic working.

629.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when Kinnitty telephone exchange, Birr, County Offaly, will become automatic.

630.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when Monegall telephone exchange, Birr, County Offaly will become automatic.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Question Nos. 628, 629 and 630 together.

Birr exchange will be converted to automatic in about 12 months' time. The exchange building is available and an order will be placed shortly for the exchange equipment. Kinnitty exchange, which is in the same charge group as Birr, will be converted a few months later. Moneygall will get automatic service in late 1983.

These forecasts are based on the assumption that contract dates for various stages of each project, such as installation and testing of equipment, are adhered to within reasonable limits.

631.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in providing a telephone service for a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon.

It has not been possible to provide service for the person named so far because the cable pair which formerly served the premises has been used for other purposes and because of the volume of engineering work on hands and requiring attention in the County Roscommon area.

632.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if a public telephone will be installed at Cortubber railway station, County Roscommon.

The provision of a kiosk at this location is not regarded as warranted at present and it is not proposed therefore to provide one there.
