Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - FCA Personnel.

848.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the very high turnover of personnel in FCA units, the high cost of uniforms and equipment and the low percentage of FCA personnel who attend training nights and annual training and the steps he intends to take to improve the situation and make the FCA more attractive.

The strength of the FCA at the end of the 1981 was close on 22,000. The high strength level over the years is regarded as most satisfactory for a force which is both voluntary and part-time and I am glad to say that the continuing buoyancy in numbers has not been affected by the turnover of personnel.

The attendance at weekly training sessions and field days varies from centre to centre but the overall pattern is satisfactory. The average numbers attending annual training, which is about 10,500, is also satisfactory and is a tribute to the dedication and commitment of FCA personnel.

Having regard to the very valuable service given by FCA personnel I am satisfied that the financial outlay on uniforms and equipment is well spent. I am sure the Deputy will agree that the new style uniform recently introduced has done much to enhance the image of An Forsa.

I am satisfied that the FCA are a very attractive force for young men interested in military activities and it is my intention to ensure that it will continue to be so.
