Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - Housing Needs.

896.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to provide sufficient moneys to each local authority to provide the amount of housing needed as a result of the survey on housing carried out in 1980.

In 1980-1981, local authorities carried out assessments of total housing requirements. These assessments did not distinguish between private and local authority housing. An analysis of the assessments is now practically completed. On 30 March 1982 I indicated in Dáil Éireann that I intend to press ahead with the publication of a White Paper on Housing around the end of this year, columns 907 and 908 of Official Report. The White Paper will set out the analysis of national housing requirements and the Government's programme to meet those requirements in terms of finance, housing production and the quality of housing and its environment. The White Paper will also distinguish between housing provided by local authorities and by the private sector.

The Government have set a production target of 6,000 local authority houses per annum. Sufficient funds to achieve this target will be made available through the public capital programme and will be allocated to individual housing authorities on the basis of comparative urgency of need for funds to finance their local authority housing programmes.
