Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Traffic Signs.

936.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider the introduction of legislation to place a statutory obligation on local authorities to erect prominent cautionary traffic signs outside all schools.

Road authorities are empowered to provide traffic signs subject to the consent of the Garda Commissioner and the Commissioner can also direct a road authority to provide a sign in a particular location. I am satisfied that road authorities are aware of their responsibilities in this regard and I do not consider it appropriate to seek to impose a statutory obligation as suggested by the Deputy.
