Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - State Forest Fencing.

945.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will make an order making it compulsory that State forests lands be fenced in view of the number of prosecutions that have issued, particularly to hill sheep farmers, for trespass upon such lands.

Whilst it is normal departmental practice to erect fences for the protection of young plantations and to maintain these fences until the crop is beyond damage by stock, there is no obligation in law on the Forest and Wildlife Service — or on any landowner — to fence their property in favour of adjoining owners. It is the responsibility of individual landowners to prevent their stock from straying. No change in these arrangements is envisaged.
