Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - River Slaney Salmon.

949.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the proposals there are to ensure that salmon numbers in the River Slaney are returned to previous years' levels.

As in respect of other rivers there are existing national and local statutory regulations designed to conserve the salmon stocks in the River Slaney.

Under the Fisheries Act, 1980, the conservation, protection, development and improvement of the inland fisheries within each fisheries region is a matter for the regional fisheries board concerned. In the case of the River Slaney these functions rest with the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board.

In addition, the Eastern Regional Fisheries Board in conjunction with the Central Fisheries Board, are required under the Act to submit to me for consideration an inland fisheries development programme which should include the River Slaney as necessary. This programme is awaited.
