Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - Duleek (Meath) Policing.

978.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the rapid increase in crime and destruction in Duleek, County Meath, he will give an undertaking that a 24-hour Garda service will be provided for the people of this district.

979.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has received representations from the Mill Race Residents Association, Duleek, County Meath, in relation to inadequate policing there; the action he proposes to take to provide additional Garda strength and a 24-hour service there; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 978 and 979 together.

I have received the representations referred to in Question No. 979.

The precise arrangements for policing individual areas are made by the Garda authorities. The authorities have informed me that the current strength at Duleek is the maximum that can be provided at present having regard to overall resources and other demands on Garda services. However, the local Garda officers have recently arranged for the performance of additional patrols in the Duleek area and they consider that the policing arrangements now in operation for the area make the best use of available resources.

The Garda authorities have also indicated that the present opening hours of Duleek station have been so fixed as to enable the station party to carry out the maximum amount of outdoor police duties while maintaining an adequate office service. They consider that an extension of the opening hours would not be justified at present.
