Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - Householders' Joint Income.

450.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of householders where the joint income of husband and wife exceeds £15,000 per annum.

The information available in relation to the incomes of married income tax payers is contained in tables 82 to 88 of the annual report of the Revenue Commissioners for the year ended 31 December 1979, copies of which are in the Library. These tables, which deal with the distribution of incomes and are subject to the limitations mentioned in the notes relating to those tables, show that the number of married couples with incomes exceeding £15,000 are: (a) where the wife is earning, 1,273; (b) where the wife is not earning, 4,028.

The corresponding tables for the year 1979-80 which will appear in the report for 1980 show that the corresponding figures for that year are 2,854 and 7,356 respectively.
