Vol. 336 No. 5

Written Answers. - Coast Erosion.

460.

asked the Minister for Finance when he expects to provide money for the carrying out of works to prevent coastal erosion at Laytown, County Meath.

461.

asked the Minister for Finance if he received a draft of two resolutions from Meath County Council in respect of coastal erosion in Laytown/Bettystown, County Meath; if he is satisfied with the terms of the proposed resolutions; and, if so, when he will return them to Meath County Council so that the preparation of remedial works in respect of the erosion can be taken a step further.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I propose to take Questions Nos. 460 and 461 together.

The Commissioners of Public Works have advised Meath County Council that, subject to some minor alterations, the draft resolution and draft undertaking submitted by the county council in May 1982 would be acceptable to them.

Until the necessary further preliminaries, required by the Coastal Protection Act, 1963, have been undertaken by the county council and the commissioners, it is not possible to state when any moneys required will be made available for a coast protection scheme.

462.

asked the Minister for Finance the steps being taken to halt coastal erosion at Rosslare, County Wexford.

Coast protection works were carried out at Rosslare Strand by the Office of Public Works between 1957 and 1965 and are being maintained by that office. An adequate supply of sand to nourish the beach is essential if the protection works are to be properly maintained. Following the execution of certain works in the harbour by CIE, the natural supply of sand diminished and difficulty arose in supplementing the supply. At the request of the Minister for Transport, CIE (the harbour authority) are now supplying the beach with sand.
