Vol. 336 No. 6

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Luggage Examination.

129.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the justified complaints of members of our Defence Forces regarding the intense scrutiny they undergo by customs officials and the confiscation by them of souvenirs on their return form Lebanon; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The luggage of members of the Defence Forces returning from Lebanon recently was subjected to the normal level of customs examination. No complaints were received by the Revenue Commissioners regarding that examination and no goods belonging to members of the Defence Forces were confiscated. Some goods, namely cigarettes and spirits, in quantities exceeding those entitled to duty-free admission were detained for payment of duty.
