Vol. 336 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cork City Development Plan.

13.

asked the Minister for the Environment when he intends to set up an inner city authority similar to the one outlined in the arrangement announced in the Dáil on 9 March 1982, between Deputies Haughey and Gregory-Independent as Cork has adopted a very detailed inner city development plan.

14.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he intends to make funds available for the carrying out of local development plans for urban renewal in Cork city.

15.

asked the Minister for the Environment the moneys made available to Cork Corporation for urban renewal in 1981-82.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 13, 14 and 15 together.

On the question of an inner city authority the position is as explained in my reply to Questions Nos. 11 and 12 by the Deputy. Substantial funds are made available to Cork Corporation for investment in support of their development plans, including their aims for urban renewal. The corporation's allocations for housing, road works, sanitary services and environmental schemes are particularly relevant in this regard. It is not possible to distinguish in detail between urban renewal and other objectives in the use of these various resources by the corporation but the overall allocations to them for the years referred to are given in the following table which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I will have circulated with the Official Report.

As indicated in the reply to Questions Nos. 11 and 12 special consideration is being given to the urban renewal situation, especially in the main urban centres, with a view to providing whatever further support may be possible and appropriate for inner urban development and renewal in those areas. The Minister of State, Deputy G. Brady, made a special visit to Cork on 11 and 12 May to examine the postion there as part of his process.

Urban renewal in Cork can benefit also from the special budget provision referred to in the other reply, namely those relating to the revolving fund and to the new charges proposed on derelict sites and on office development.
