Vol. 336 No. 7

Written Answers. - Bigamy Cases.

75.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions for bigamy which were instituted in each of the last ten years; the number of persons convicted of bigamy in the courts in each of the last ten years; and the penalty imposed by the courts following any such conviction.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that in the ten year period up to 31 December 1981, proceedings for bigamy were instituted in four cases: three in 1974 and one in 1978. In the 1978 case the charges were dropped on the directions of the Director of Public Prosecutions. In the other three cases there were no convictions.
