asked the Minister for Defence whether he intends to incorporate amendments to all Defence Force Regulations into new printed editions; if so, when they will be published and if they will be published by 31 December 1982; whether newly commissioned officers of both the PDF and reserve will be issued with full sets of these regulations; and when the last updated editions of Defence Force Regulations A1-A17 and R5 were published.

The printing and publication of Defence Force Regulations and amendments thereto is an ongoing process. The number of regulations being reprinted at present is 14. Amendments are incorporated in the main regulation when it is being reprinted.

Newly printed copies of regulations and amendments thereto will, in accordance with existing arrangements, continue to be issued to all officers of the Permanent Defence Force and to be made available at unit and sub-unit level for officers of the Reserve Defence Force.

Defence Force Regulations A1-17 and R5 were last reprinted as indicated below:—

Notes: 1. The figures in respect of discharges include personnel transferred to the Reserve Defence Force and personnel who died in service.

2. The Vote for Defence for 1982 provides for an average strength of "other ranks" in the Permanent Defence Force of 13,600. As the actual strength had exceeded this figure in December 1981 recruitment was suspended.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will outline the organisation of the FCA, An Slua Mhuiri and the PDF in (a) 1959 and (b) 1982.

The central feature of the organisation established in 1959 was the integration of the FCA with the Permanent Defence Force into a combat force of six brigades with supporting elements. The 1979 reorganisation entailed principally the separation of units of the Permanent Defence Force and units of the FCA so that the field combat force is exclusively drawn from the Permanent Defence Force and the FCA has been assigned a mainly local defence role.
