Vol. 337 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Timber Prices.

18.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry when his Department will be in a position to resolve any differences that may exist between them and the Irish Timber Council; if he is aware that they are being compelled to pay prohibitive prices for Irish timber from his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I cannot accept the inference in the question as regards prohibitive timber prices. However, I can tell the Deputy that very recently, with the Minister, I had a full discussion with representatives of the Irish Timber Council in the course of which the general position of the Department and the council in relation to timber supply and various other matters were clarified. Further meetings have been arranged between officials of the Department and members of the council to examine the situation in more detail and I am confident that progress will be possible.
