The subscriber queried the calls made in the July-September 1981 period which were billed in the October-December account. He did not claim previously that his house was unoccupied during the period covered by the account. He accepted that some calls were made, including an operator assisted trunk call, which was made on 8 July 1981. In the circumstances, the call charges for the period, which have been checked and found correct, have to be maintained. The matter will, however, be discussed further with him.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will outline the cause of the main telephone cable failure at Kilmacanogue, Bray, County Wicklow; the reason for the seemingly long time in having the fault corrected; and the action taken to prevent a similar fault recurring, in view of the serious problems, both economic and social, caused to subscribers.

The loss of telephone service in the area was due to the main cable being flooded. The section of cable affected has been replaced and service restored. Because of the number of such faults which require attention by specially trained staff, I regret that there has been delay in repairing them. A programme of preventive maintenance is in hands throughout the 01 area with a view to reducing the incidence of cable outages through flooding. Given the many demands on the Department's resources however, it will be some time before the programme is completed.
