Vol. 337 No. 1

Written Answers. - Loss of Registered Letter.

544.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, arising from his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 758 of 18 May 1982, in which he said that a person (details supplied) in Dublin 1 had not as yet given notice that a particular letter had not been received by him, he now accepts that in fact such notification had been given and duly acknowledged as per an acknowledgement of 29 April 1982; and if he will now arrange to have the necessary sum paid.

The acknowledgement card dated 29 April refers to the receipt of an inquiry form from the addressee. The usual procedure in cases in which the Department's investigation fails to locate a missing registered letter includes the reasonable safeguard of a subsequent approach to the addressee for a formal denial of receipt. The denial was obtained from the addressee by an out door inquiry officer on 28 June, and arrangements are being made to pay compensation of £100.26 (which includes a refund of 26p postage) to the sender.
