asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be restored to a person (details supplied) in Ballyfermot, Dublin 10, whose telephone has been out of order continuously since 19 December 1981; the reason for the delay in restoring service to the line; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Departmental records do not indicate that the number concerned has been out of order since 19 December last. Service will be restored as soon as possible but this may take a week or so because of the large number of faults on hands.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone will be installed for a person (details supplied) in Murrinstown, County Wexford.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the delay in switching Castleblayney and Ballybay telephone exchanges, County Monaghan to automatic working.

It had been expected that Castleblayney and Ballybay exchanges would be converted to automatic working earlier this year. Unfortunately, this was not possible because of a problem affecting the control link between Castleblayney and Kells which is the controlling centre for operation and maintenance in the area. Measures to deal with the problem have been devised but, until they have been proved effective in practice, it is not possible to give an exact forecast for the changeover to automatic working. I am, however, hopeful that conversion of Castleblayney exchange will take place by September at the latest, and that Ballybay will be converted to automatic working shortly after.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for repairs to be carried out urgently to seal the manholes giving access to the telephone cables located respectively at the junction of Fortfield Park — Fortfield Road and at the junction of Fortfield Avenue — Fortfield Park, Terenure, Dublin, having regard to the fact that defective seals on these manholes caused the telephone cables to be flooded on a regular basis causing damage and loss of telephone service to many subscribers in the area; and when this work will be carried out.

I regret that subscribers in the areas mentioned by the Deputy have lost service on a number of occasions recently. I have asked that special and early consideration be given to what steps, including the sealing of manhole covers, could be taken to reduce the incidence of such outages in the future. I will advise the Deputy of the outcome.

I might add that a programme of preventive maintenance is in hands throughout the 01 area with a view to reducing the incidence of cable outages through flooding.

It has not been possible to trace an application on behalf of the person named. If the Deputy can furnish additional information about the application, e.g. when and where the application was made, further efforts will be made to trace it.
