Vol. 337 No. 4

Written Answers. - Training Courses.

550.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the average number of days spent by officers of his Department on training courses each year; and if he is satisfied with the level of management and technical training in his Department.

There is a training plan for middle and senior management in my Department which is based on the training needs of each individual officer as agreed with his superior. My Department also have the services of a full-time training officer who caters for the training needs of the clerical assistant to executive officer grades.

An average figure could be misleading since training is based on the perceived needs of individual officers. However, the number of man-course days for the period August 1981, when this Department was reconstituted, to date was 388 days.

Given the existing circumstances I regard the present level of training as not unsatisfactory but there is always room for improvement. I will continue to seek ways to improve the position.
