Vol. 337 No. 5

Written Answers. - Fisheries Board Inspections.

826.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the reason an agreement reached in August 1981 between the IT & GWU and members of the Western Regional Fisheries' Board resulting in the return to normal work by the fisheries officers as inspectors have not yet been implemented even in part; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under the Fisheries Act, 1980, any agreements on staff remuneration or conditions of employment entered into by the Fisheries Boards with staff representatives are subject to my approval and that of the Minister for the Public Service. Some aspects of the agreement in question were not acceptable to my predecessor but the Minister with the consent of the Minister for the Public Service conveyed his approval for part of the agreement and authorised the Western Regional Fisheries Board to make an alternative offer to the union in lieu of the unacceptable part of it.

The alternative offer has not been accepted by the union and a meeting to help clarify the situation is due to be held in Galway on Friday next, 9 July 1982.
