Vol. 337 No. 5

Written Answers. - Display and Sale of Improper Literature.

834.

asked the Minister for Justice the action he proposes to take on complaints in relation to the display and sale of improper literature; the steps that have been taken to prevent entry into this country of such literature for display or sale; if he will consider amending the present legislation to make the law more effective; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no information that there is a problem in relation to the display and sale of such literature. Under section 42 of the Customs Consolidation Act, 1876, the Revenue Commissioners may prevent the importation of any indecent or obscene book or other article. It is a matter for the Censorship of Publications Board in accordance with the Censorship of Publications Acts, 1929 to 1967, to decide whether the sale and distribution in the State of any publication should be prohibited and it is open to any member of the public to make a complaint to the board about any particular publication. If these provisions were shown to me to be insufficient to deal with any problem that might arise, I should, of course, be prepared to consider amending legislation.
