I propose to take Questions Nos. 577 to 593, inclusive, together.

The loss of telephone service in the area is due to the main cable being flooded. Because of the number of such faults, which require attention by specially trained staff, I regret that there is delay in repairing them, but I expect that all the service will be restored to all concerned within the next few days. A programme of preventive maintenance is in hands throughout the 01 area with a view to reducing the incidence of cable outages through flooding and, as I indicated in reply to Question No. 442 on Wednesday 30 June 1982 from the Deputy, a special examination of measures to reduce the incidence of flooding in this particular area is being undertaken.

The letter of 18 June 1982 referred to an application in October 1980 for removal of service for the firm named. The telephone is being installed on a removal basis. The reply to the parliamentary question referred to an application in June 1981 by the person named for service on a further line at the same address.

Service was provided for the first time on 21 June 1982 and it is understood that it is satisfactory. It had been expected that service would be provided about the end of May 1982, but regrettably it was not possible to do so because of exceptional pressure of engineering work in the Dublin area in recent months.

602.
