Vol. 337 No. 5

Written Answers. - TV Licences.

631.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will authorise the RTE Authority to collect TV licence fees.

I would refer the Deputies to my statement on this matter in my opening speech on the Second Stage of the Postal and Telecommunications Services Bill, 1982 (Official Report of 19 May 1982, column 1587).

The question of responsibility for and method of collection of television licence fees is being considered in the context of the restructuring of my Department into two semi-State bodies. RTE's request to be given this work is being considered in this context.

632.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the present position of the RTE application for an increase in its licence fees; and whether he is satisfied that the present system of processing applications for licence fee increases is allowing RTE to cover its legitimate costs.

RTE very recently submitted a new application for a television licence fee increase and this is being considered at present. I am satisfied with the present system of processing such applications.
