Vol. 337 No. 6

Written Answers. - TV Licence Fees.

500.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether, in view of the estimated 150,000 TV licence fee evaders, he is satisfied with the present system of collecting these fees; and if he will consider authorising RTE to collect the revenue as it is RTE that is directly affected by the shortfall.

I would refer the Deputy to my statement on this matter in my opening speech on the Second Stage of the Postal and Telecommunications Services Bill, 1982 (Official Report of 19 May 1982, col. 1587).

The question of responsibility for and method of collection of television licence fees is being considered in the context of the restructuring of my Department into two semi-State bodies. RTE's request to be given this work is being considered in this context.
