Vol. 337 No. 6

Written Answers. - National School Buildings.

502.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if arrangements have been made to provide proper accommodation for the 96 pupils who will attend Spa national school, County Kerry in September; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

My Department wrote to the chairman of the board of management of Spa national school, County Kerry, in May last, concerning the provision of a prefabricated classroom. His reply is awaited.

503.

asked the Minister for Education when his Department intend to pay a grant in respect of work carried out to a boundary wall to a school (details supplied) in Dunmore, County Galway.

My Department sanctioned a grant in 1980 towards the cost of providing a boundary wall at Ballinlass national school, Dunmore, County Galway.

It is understood from the Commissioners of Public Works that work on the boundary wall has been completed and that payment of the grant will be made at an early date.

504.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on the proposal to build a permanent extension to Whitechurch national school, County Waterford; if he is aware of the serious state of disrepair of the two prefabricated buildings attached to this school and that one of the prefabricated buildings had to be closed during the recent bad weather; if, in these circumstances, he will give an undertaking to the House that a permanent extension will be built without delay; and if he will also make a statement on the position as a result of the recent deputation he received.

I would direct the Deputy's attention to my reply of 1 April 1982, to a previous question concerning a permanent extension to Ballinameela national school, County Waterford, and the sanctioning of a grant by my Department towards improvements and repairs to the prefabricated classrooms.

With regard to the prefabricated classrooms, I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that they have advised the chairman to seek tenders for the necessary works and they await the submission of tenders. In addition, having discussed the case recently with a deputation from the area, I have asked my Department to investigate other possibilities with the aim of ensuring that suitable accommodation is available for the pupils of the school for the coming school year.
