Vol. 337 No. 8

Estimates, 1982. - Vote 29: Office of the Minister for Education.

I move:

That a sum not exceeding £60,273,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of December, 1982, for the salaries and expenses of the Office of the Minister for Education (including Institutions of Science and Art), for certain miscellaneous educational and cultural services and for payment of sundry grants-in-aid.

Is that in respect of the Estimate and the Supplementary Estimate?

No, the main Estimate.

Is it anticipated that that Department will be invited to participate in any of the savings processes and if so, in which areas will the savings be effected?

Yes, the Department are being asked to make savings. That will not apply to some of the specific Votes further along the way.

(Dún Laoghaire): Will there be any change in the school entry age?

I am surprised that Deputy Barrett would raise that question. As he knows, the Government reversed the decision of their predecessors on that aspect——

A general election promise.

Yes, and they have kept that promise, unlike some parties who broke their promises.

Vote put and agreed to.
