Vol. 337 No. 9

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - PAYE Tax.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance (a) the total amount of income tax collected from the PAYE sector in 1981; and (b) the estimated amount to be collected in 1982.

(Clare): The estimated net receipt of income tax collected through the PAYE mechanism in 1981 was £1,093.3 million. The corresponding post-budget estimate for 1982, taking account of the cost of the special PRSI allowance of £312, is £1,376 million. These figures cover more than income tax on ordinary wages and salaries. They include tax paid by directors of close companies who are akin to the self employed as well as tax on “other income” of employees such as rent and other investment income.

Is this the first year in our history when interest on debt actually paid out equals or almost exceeds income tax receipts?

(Clare): I cannot say if that is the case.
