Vol. 337 No. 9

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford School.

26.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement on the present position regarding the tenders for the proposed new St. Martin's special school for handicapped children in Waterford; if he is aware of the delay in having tenders accepted by his Department; and when work will commence on this school.

27.

(Waterford) asked the Minister for Finance when he will sanction the payment of a grant for an extension at St. Martin's school, Lady Lane, Waterford.

(Clare): I propose to take Questions Nos. 26 and 27 together.

Tenders for the erection of the proposed new special school for handicapped children, St. Martin's, in Waterford submitted by the architects engaged by the board of management of the school are being examined by the Commissioners of Public Works.

The delay in finalising the examination is due to the fact that the size and cost of the proposed building are in excess of the limits stipulated by the Department of Education.

The commissioners met representatives of the board of management and their consultants on 2 June 1982 to discuss these problems and are awaiting submission of proposals to resolve the difficulties.

It is not possible to say at this stage when work will commence.
