Vol. 337 No. 11

Written Answers. - Croom (County Limerick) Orthopaedic Hospital.

278.

asked the Minister for Health the number of persons waiting for (a) hip replacement operations and (b) other non-emergency orthopaedic surgery carried out in Croom Orthopaedic Hospital, County Limerick; and the length of time persons must remain on the waiting list for such surgery.

The latest figures available indicate that at 30 June last there were 243 persons then awaiting surgery for total-hip replacement at Croom Hospital, the number awaiting other non-emergency surgery was 521.

The length of time which a patient remains on the waiting list is determined by the seriousness of his or her particular condition. There is no specified length of time a patient must wait before being admitted for surgery. Many patients are admitted as emergency or urgent cases and this lengthens the waiting period of those still on the waiting list. For those who are put on a waiting list the average waiting time is about 14 months which does not compare unfavourably with the position in other areas.
