Vol. 337 No. 11

Written Answers. - Naval Service Vessel Fire.

372.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will confirm details of a report in the media (details supplied) regarding a fire aboard a Naval Service vessel; if he will give full details of the incident, including the date, the damage and the amount of time the vessel was out of service; and the steps he proposes to take to prevent a recurrence.

A fire occurred in the engine room of LE Aisling on 19 November 1981 while the ship was in a position 37 miles south of Tuskar Rock. The fire was caused by a leak of lubricating oil onto a hot exhaust manifold and was promptly extinguished by the ship's carbon dioxide fire fighting system. No structural damage occurred but there was damage to electrical fittings, wiring and paint surfaces in the immediate area of the fire. Repair of the damage was carried out by Naval Service personnel.

The ship returned to service on 17 January 1982. Arising from this incident detailed examinations have been carried out on LE Aisling and the other Naval Service patrol vessels to eliminate as far as possible the risk of a similar situation arising again.
