Vol. 337 No. 11

Written Answers. - EEC Fish Quotas.

420.

(Donegal South-West) asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the means available to him to get verification of the landings of the various species of fish now being caught on quota by other EEC countries.

National fishing quotas have not yet been agreed by the European Economic Community for 1982. Pending agreement on such quotas, each member state is required to submit catch returns to the Commission in respect of "quota" species taken by boats registered in its territory. The Commission in turn notifies the other member states of these catches.

A scheme of monitoring and control has been adopted in principle by the Council of Ministers, the detailed rules of which have yet to be agreed. This scheme when fully in operation will enable verification of the landings to which the Deputy refers.

Question No. 421 postponed.
