Vol. 337 No. 11

Written Answers. - County Galway Factory Safety Standards.

106.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is satisfied with the standard of equipment and safety standards at a factory (details supplied) in Ballinasloe, County Galway; if not, if he will state the specific objections to the plant by his officials; and if he will point out the deficiencies in relation to its competitors in this country.

Inspectors from the industrial inspectorate of my Department visited this factory on 28 April, 1982 and 30 June 1982. On the occasion of the first visit the factory was not in production and the inspectors advised as to suitability, equipment and as to the layout of the factory. When the factory was revisited on 30 June 1982 contraventions of the Safety in Industry Acts, 1955 and 1980 were found. The management of the factory have been informed, accordingly, and have been warned that the contraventions must be rectified.

I would point out that reports from the industrial inspectorate to me are confidential. The Deputy may rest assured that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure that the provisions of the safety in industry legislation are being applied in the case of this factory.
