Vol. 337 No. 11

Written Answers. - West Coast Lifeboat Service.

121.

asked the Minister for Transport if he has any intention or any proposals to provide a lifeboat along the west coast, with particular reference to County Mayo.

The lifeboat service around the coasts of Ireland is provided and operated by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, which is an independent voluntary body which provides the lifeboats, lifeboat stations, and appoints the station personnel, including the lifeboat crews.

I understand that the institution has for some time past been examining the position in relation to lifeboat coverage of the coastal area between the existing lifeboat stations at Kilronan and Arranmore. On completion of its examination the institution will submit a report to my Department's Marine Search and Rescue Committee whose function it is to keep under review the general arrangements for marine search and rescue in Ireland and to make recommendations for any improvements considered necessary.
