Vol. 338 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grant for Team.

28.

asked the Minister for Education if it is his intention to grant aid Team; and, if not, why.

Team Educational Theatre Ltd. receives a grant from An Chomhairle Ealaíon. It is not open to me to make a further grant to it from the funds provided through the Votes for the educational services.

Will the Minister of State not agree that this is an important and positive dimension to the work being carried out by Team and, for this reason, they comply with the criteria for grant aid?

The Department recognise that the company is composed of well qualified and highly motivated people and that a certain contribution can be made to the social education of the young people. Team not only get a grant from An Chomhairle Ealaíon but also from Dublin Corporation. Therefore, it would not be open to me to give them further funds through Votes for the educational services.

The reality for these very well qualified people is unemployment if they cannot get a grant from the Department. Would the Minister like to see such talent wasted?

I was not aware that the reality was unemployment if these people could not get a grant from the Department. This year they got a grant of £33,000 from An Chomhairle Ealaíon and another grant from Dublin Corporation — I do not have the details in front of me now. It is not open to me to give them a further grant from the Votes for the educational system.

The Minister is aware that a grant of £30,000 will not provide employment for too many people in 1982.

If the Deputy would like to take the matter up with An Chomhairle Ealaíon to ensure representations are made for an adequate increase in the grant for next year, that might be the answer.

I will take the matter up with the Department of Education who have responsibility in that regard.
