Vol. 338 No. 1

Written Answers. - Honorary Consular Representation.

280.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs in which countries Ireland is represented by an honorary consul; their functions; how they are remunerated; and the steps being taken to keep them informed on the domestic Irish situation.

The Deputy will find a list of the Honorary Consulates maintained by Ireland in the 1982 edition of Eolaire an Stáit/State Directory (pages 168-170).

The function of our honorary consuls is to protect in their areas of appointment the interests of Ireland and of its citizens, principally through the provision of consular services and through assisting in the promotion of trade. Honorary consular posts are unsalaried, and remuneration is by way of a small annual honorarium together with one-half of the consular fees collected by the consulate.

Because of the wide range of location and circumstance of our honorary consulate offices, the holders of these posts have various ways of keeping themselves informed on developments in Ireland. They are also supplied with the information bulletins and material issued by my Department, which is of course, always available to answer any queries that they may make.
