Vol. 338 No. 2

Written Answers. - Aer Lingus Viscount Crash.

46.

asked the Minister for Transport if, in view of the belated admission by the British Government that they were responsible for the sinking of an Irish trawler and that they did not acknowledge this until two weeks after it happened, he will now consider reopening the investigation into the crash of the Aer Lingus Viscount off Tuskar Rock in 1968; and furthermore in view of the fact that the official inquiry into the crash, in which so many lives were lost, did not rule out the possibility that the aircraft had been struck by a missile or other flying object during British military exercises, if he will now ask his British counterpart to make details of their investigation available.

I do not consider that events relating to the fishing trawler Sharelga would warrant the re-opening of the investigation into the loss of the Aer Lingus Viscount off Tuskar Rock on 24 March 1968.

Both during and after the investigation into the Viscount accident there was very close co-operation and exchange of information between the Irish and British authorities. I see no point in pursuing the matter further at this stage.
