Vol. 338 No. 2

Written Answers. - AnCo Training Centres.

252.

asked the Minister for Labour the criteria for the setting up of AnCO training centres; and if he will consider setting up such a centre in Westport, County Mayo.

1. The criteria used by AnCO to determine the most suitable location for a training centre are as follows: total population in the area; population density around potential locations; existing industrial jobs and planned growth; minimum training centre size for economic operation; availability of financial resources.

2. Under the building programme of AnCO to date all major towns in the country were examined in the light of the above criteria. Following this examination a number of sites were selected for training centres.

3. The council of AnCO are currently reviewing their building programme in the light of the financial criterion mentioned above and also in the light of the increased capacity of existing training centres following the introduction of a productivity agreement earlier this year. Even at this stage of the review, however, I understand it is unlikely that AnCO could justify the establishment of a permanent training centre in Westport.

4. An important part of the AnCO approach to training is to cater for the needs of areas which do not have a permanent AnCO training centre by running courses organised by their external training division. These courses are run in rented accommodation or in employers' premises and are designed to be flexible and responsive to local needs. Training facilities are also provided outside AnCO training centres through mobile training units and the community youth training programme.
