Vol. 338 No. 3

Written Answers. - Motor Taxation Receipts.

257.

asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money collected from motor taxation in the past four years; and the amount of this money paid to local authorities for road development, road improvement and repairs such as surface dressing etc. in each of those years.

During the years 1978-1981 a total of £93,978,135 was collected in respect of motor vehicle licence duty (including driving licence fees). The proceeds of such duty accrued directly to the Exchequer.

Grants to road authorities for the improvement and maintenance of public roads are paid on foot of monies carried on my Department's Vote. During the period in question the total amount paid in such grants was £212,235,000.
