asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware of the anxiety being caused to parents and staff of the Christian Brothers School, St. Mary's Place, Dublin 7, in regard to the inadequate financing of various aspects of the school, especially the capitation grant; and if he will outline his proposals for alleviating the distress being caused in this case.

Dublin South-East): The amount of capitation grant payable to authorities of national schools is calculated by reference to general regulations related to categories of school. The general rate of grant was £15 per pupil in the 1981-82 school-year, on condition that a local contribution of at least £3.75 per pupil was lodged to the school account. I am not authorised to make additional grants to individual schools.

The school board of management is charged with the direct government of the school and is responsible for managing the school finances including the making of arrangements for the collection of such funds locally in supplement of the State grant as will ensure that the school premises will be adequately heated and cleaned and kept in a proper decorative condition.

A special grant of £500 to provide equipment or improvements, particularly in the area of physical education, was allocated to this school in the current year.

448.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the school run by the Sisters of Charity at 76 Upper Gardiner Street, Dublin 1 is in very bad condition; and if he will indicate his proposals to deal with this case.

Dublin South-East): The Commissioners of Public Works have been asked for a report and recommendation regarding essential improvement works at Gardiner Street convent national school, Dublin. A grant will be sanctioned towards the cost of such improvements as are recommended by them.

The Dáil adjourned at 8.45 p.m. until 10.30 a.m. on Thursday, 4 November 1982.
