Vol. 338 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Rent Allowances.

120.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of applications for a rent allowance made to his Department under the provisions of the Housing (Private Rented Dwellings) Act, 1982; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

121.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of persons in receipt of the special rent allowances under the Housing (Private Rented Dwellings) Act, 1982; the average amount of the allowance; the frequency and method of payment; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 120 and 121 together.

Two applications for rent allowances have been received in my Department and one allowance has been awarded at the rate of £9.30 weekly from week ending 31 July 1982 to week ending 28 August 1982 and at the rate of £10.30 weekly from week ending 4 September 1982. An allowance is payable weekly by payable order issued from my Department.

One of the conditions for receipt of an allowance is that the terms of the tenancy, which would include the increased rent, are fixed by a court. The District Court (Housing (Private Rented Dwellings) Act, 1982) Rules, 1982, made for this purpose came into operation on 22 September 1982 but I understand that because of a dispute affecting district court clerks applications under these rules have been delayed.
