Vol. 338 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Waterford Unemployment.

162.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he is aware of the alarming rate of unemployment in west Waterford following a number of factory closures; and the steps his Department and the IDA are taking to alleviate the situation, in particular, in the towns of Lismore, Cappoquin and Tallow.

I am fully aware of the unemployment situation in the west Waterford area. I am assured by the Industrial Development Authority that they are making every possible effort to attract industry to the area.

Heavy job losses in Quigley Magnesite, Cappoquin Bacon and expected lay-offs at Irish Leathers should be offset to some extent by jobs to come onstream in major projects such as Rumson Chemicals, Block Drug and Waterford Co-Operative in Dungarvan and the expansion by Cyplas at Cappoquin.
