Vol. 338 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Closure of Mussel Fishery.

410.

asked the Minister for Health the present position in relation to the closure of the mussel fishery at the mouth of the River Boyne, which has deprived dependent fishermen in the area of a livelihood; when this restriction is likely to end; and if independent studies by Irish authorities, as distinct from authorities overseas, have been provided to him to justify the current restriction.

It was necessary to prohibit the sale of mussels from the shellfish layings at Mornington, County Meath, because tests had shown that they were so highly contaminated as to constitute a risk to public health. My Department has remained in close touch with the situation. I am sure the Deputy will appreciate that evidence will be needed that the risk to public health has been eliminated before the prohibition can be lifted.

Studies carried out in this country on samples of Mornington mussels were made available to my Department and they justify the action taken. This matter will be kept under review with my Department.
