Vol. 338 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Litter Prosecutions.

160.

asked the Minister for the Environment the steps taken since the passing of the Litter Bill, 1981, to prosecute offenders; the number of such persons who have been prosecuted; and the steps he is taking to ensure that local authorities maintain their dumps properly.

Prosecutions under the Litter Act, 1982, which came into operation on 1 August 1982 are a matter for local authorities. My Department do not have details of the number of such prosecutions.

I have provided local authorities with advice and guidance on the implementation of the Act and urged them to give effect to its provisions.

In conjunction with An Foras Forbartha, my Department held a seminar on 14 October 1982 for local authority staff dealing with the implementation of the Act. A further training seminar for litter wardens will be held on 29 October 1982.

The management of their disposal tips is a matter for each local authority concerned. The Department give what advice and guidance is possible — most recently in a circular letter issued on 30 July 1982 — on good practice in regard to different aspects of waste disposal and in general urges the local authorities to observe acceptable standards.
