Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Gaeltacht Road Signs.

170.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his Department are prepared to consider amending legislation on the erection of road signs in Gaeltacht areas or if he will give a firm directive to Donegal County Council as to the proper legal signposting which may be implemented in the country, in order to avoid further the destruction of bilingual signs in Gaeltacht areas.

The Road Traffic (Signs) (Amendment) Regulations, 1970, prescribe the use of the Irish version only of place names in Gaeltacht areas on informative signs within the Gaeltacht. I do not propose to amend this requirement and I have informed Donegal County Council accordingly in recent correspondence.
