Vol. 339 No. 4

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

905.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason unemployment assistance is not being paid to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick.

The person concerned lodged a claim for unemployment assistance on 5 July 1982. His case was referred to a social welfare officer for investigation of his means but he was unavailable for interview when the social welfare officer called to his address. A further appointment was made but again he was not available for interview.

The person concerned did not sign as unemployed after 5 July 1982 and it was assumed that he did not wish to pursue his claim for unemployment assistance.

(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason unemployment benefit is not being paid to a person (details supplied) in County Limerick.

The person concerned is not qualified for unemployment benefit as he exhausted his entitlement on 9 March 1980 when he completed 390 days and as he has not resumed employment since that date he has no requalifying contributions.

His claim for unemployment assistance has been allowed with effect from 4 January 1983 at the maximum rate payable to him £69.55. He is a postal applicant and arrangements have been made to pay all arrears of unemployment assistance due to him this week, less advances of supplementary welfare allowance which he received pending the outcome of his claim. Further weekly payments will be made to him as they become due.

907.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will arrange for the immediate payment of disability benefit to a person (details supplied) in County Roscommon.

The person concerned was disallowed payment of disability benefit from 14 June 1982 following examination by a medical referee who expressed the opinion that he was capable of work. He appealed against the disallowance and in connection with his appeal he was examined on 14 September 1982 by a different medical referee who also considered him to be capable of work. The case was then referred to an Appeals Officer who upheld the decision to disallow payment of disability benefit.

If the person concerned has been incapable of work since then, he should submit medical evidence in the normal way and his entitlement to any further benefit will be considered.

The person concerned claimed unemployment assistance and following the completion of inquiries he was assessed with means £23.00 weekly derived from land. He is accordingly entitled to unemployment assistance at the weekly rate of £52.35 being the maximum rate payable to him £75.35 less means £23.00.

Payment of weekly unemployment assistance commenced this week and the balance of arrears due, less advances of supplementary welfare allowance which were paid to him pending the outcome of his application, will be paid shortly.
